VHS tapes are hard to recycle. Their outside case is made from #5 plastic (polypropylene). The tape inside is made from #1 plastic but is coated in a few different metals, making it difficult to recycle. The Mylar tape is actually hazardous due to the metals on its surface.
GreenDisk, a leading recycler of electronic media in the United States, is one of the few companies that actually recycles those tapes through their technotrash boxes.
If you have enough tapes to fill up a box (between 50 to 100 depending on the box size), you may look to purchase your own technotrash box directly from GreenDisk.com. They will ship you a box, you fill it up, and schedule a FedEx pick up when ready.
To recycle your VHS tapes through Recycle Brevard, we ask for you to donate $1.50/tape to contribute towards the purchase of a technotrash box that will be shared with the community. Recycle Brevard does not receive any compensation from this program and will only be able to recycle tapes accompanied by proper donation.
Tapes are to be dropped off at our office on a Saturday when we are open. Check our online calendar for open dates.

If you have more than VHS tapes that you would like to recycle, see if we are able to accept those hard-to-recycle items and consider selecting an option from our One-time Recyclers program and also check our Recycling Club Membership levels. Those may be a better fit for your recycling needs. |
